You can also head to the Art Institute of Chicago in Grant Park to a variety or artwork painted by celebrated artists. The Chicago Cubs are famous in baseball and for their Wrigley ball park. You do not want to miss this authentic American pastime. You should also look into court side tickets for the Chicago Bulls, the former team of legend, Michael Jordan. There are many other sports to see, but Chicago residents seem most proud of their baseball and basketball teams.

Texas Sized Vacation

April 10, 2012 in U.S by TravelReflex Team

If you’re visiting the United States and you get a chance to travel through the enormous state of Texas, there are a few things you don’t want to miss. The great thing about Texas is the diversity. Houston, San Antonio and Dallas metropolitan areas were all ranked in the top-ten most culturally diverse cities in America. As a border state, the Latin influence seeps most deeply into the cuisine, making salsa a side for just about everything from hamburgers to the fish special. The capital city of Austin sits right in the heart of hill country with a 22-mile long lake running a track through the center of the city. Here are just a few of the things you’ll want to check out in Texas:

1. Festivals

There are giant music festivals like Austin City Limits (ACL) and South by Southwest (SXSW) to attract people to Austin over spring break and late summer. The Greek Festival and Livestock and Rodeo in Houston and Fiesta in San Antonio are other beacons of ongoing city celebrations.

2. Sports

The Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, San Antonio Spurs, Houston Rockets, Dallas Burn, Texas Rangers, Dallas Stars, Houston Astros, Dallas Mavericks and several other professional and league sports have homes in Texas.

3. Cuisine

If you want outstanding barbacoa tacos from a tiny trailer in a parking lot, fresh gulf oysters and crawfish or a giant, juicy steak, Texas is your place. If you want terrific Chinese, Columbian, Ethiopian, Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, Tex-Mex, Burgers, Bistro, Sushi, chicken fried steak or Italian, Texas is your place. From pint-sized trailers to 5-star restaurants, Texas has anything and everything you could possibly want. I highly recommend the queso.

4. Outdoor Activity

Camping, climbing, hiking, water skiing, horse-back riding, canoeing, kayaking, yoga, fishing and many more outdoor activities are all over the state.

The people are friendly and happy to help out a traveler. If you have the chance to visit sometime, it’s a great place to spend a few days or even a few years.

The Top 5 Romantic Appalachian Mountain Cabin Getaways

February 7, 2012 in U.S by TravelReflex Team

Appalachian Trail

Author Bio: Cindy G. is a travel review writer and travel insurance agent. She lives in Maryland with her husband where they enjoy hiking together. She recommends finding the best auto insurance rates online.

When it comes to finding a romantic cabin getaway, the Appalachian Mountains are the perfect place for couples to find privacy and scenic beauty in one affordable location. As the mountain range stretches from Alabama all the way into the Canadian border, most East Coast residents can access the area quickly by car, saving even more on your travel expenses. These are some trips that are possible with some simple travel insurance, a two-seat convertible, and an adventurous spirit.

If you are able to getaway with your loved one for a quick vacation, be sure to choose one of the following five romantic Appalachian Mountain cabin getaways. Each location is home to beautiful scenery, friendly residents and exclusive areas that are guaranteed to give you privacy.

1. Hot Springs, North Carolina

This beautiful destination is situated conveniently just a 45 minutes drive from the city of Asheville, North Carolina and less then 90 minutes from Nashville, Tennessee. This incredible mountain town is actually located right on the Appalachian Trail, making it the perfect place to visit if you are interested in hiking.

By choosing a cabin within walking distance from the trail itself, you can set off on day trips in either direction and still be home each night to cuddle in front of the fire with your partner. There are several water sources that only add to the scenic mountain beauty, including the Spring Creek and the French Broad River. Choose a cabin situated within the Pisgah National Forest to ensure the ultimate private getaway.

2. Dahlonega, Georgia

This mountain town is known for its beauty, but there is also a small town charm present here that is a great way to enjoy a romantic getaway. Visitors who are renting a private cabin might want to venture out to enjoy the delicious, rustic meals in the town, or perhaps one of the many vineyards and wineries. Half a dozen wineries offer tours and tastings, which is a wonderful day to spend a romantic afternoon with your loved one. Dahlonega is located in the heart of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, just a short drive from the start of the Appalachian Trail. There are also countless historical landmarks worth a visit within the town itself.

3. White Sulphur Spring, West Virginia

This town is famed both for being a popular resort getaway in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains and having a rich heritage and several interesting historical landmarks. Although some of the resorts in the area are larger, there also exist several romantic cabins just on the outskirts of the city.

Couples should choose to stay in one of these locations, enjoying the rural scenery and only driving into the city to enjoy the fine dining, varied cultural scene and exciting nightlife. Enjoy plenty of outdoor activities like mountain biking, hiking or even canoeing together with your partner in this breathtakingly beautiful area of Appalachia.

4. Greenville, Maine

Although many people think of the best Appalachian mountain getaways as being in the South, in reality the range stretches all the way up into Canada. The Appalachian Trail ends in Maine, close to the quaint town of Greenville, Maine.

In the winter months only 2,000 people live in the area, but the summer brings twice as many visitors each month. Thankfully, the cooler weather means lower prices for cabin rentals and plenty of privacy for visitors. Spend your days hiking in the nearby wilderness, fishing or dining at the upscale eateries in town.

5. Daniel Boone Country, Kentucky

As the name might imply, this area of Kentucky is an outdoor lovers paradise. The incredible natural beauty will take your breath away, whether you are mountain biking through the Big South Fork National Recreation Area or hiking through the Red River Gorge.

There is little in the way of tourism out here in the wilderness, although you will find a handful of friendly shopkeepers and family run restaurants in the area. For the most part, visitors stay in quaint cabins situated in the heart of Appalachia, spending their time outdoors enjoy the natural beauty or indoors cuddled up in front of a fire.

Each of these five Appalachian Mountain cabin getaways is the perfect place to relax, enjoy natural scenic beauty and spend some time with your loved one. Nothing is more romantic than a private cabin destination, just ask Prince William. Each destination is surprisingly affordable during the colder winter months, so you and your loved one can make a great getaway.

Valentines Trip Ideas

February 4, 2012 in U.S by TravelReflex Team

Chena Hot Springs Ice Palace 1

Northern lights viewing is becoming one of the most favored romantic travel destinations of adventurous couples seeking unique locations for private and cozy celebrations of St. Valentine’s Day. Near the Arctic Circle in Alaska is a comfortable, rustically themed resort called Chena Hot Springs. The resort features midnight rides to the top of a small mountain that provides an unobstructed view of the skies. Hot drinks are served in a heated yurt with transparent ceilings and windows while nature puts on a fabulous ballet across a sky untainted by light pollution or smog. Other activities include dog sledding, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and ice-carving exhibitions. Apple martinis are served in cocktail glasses carved from solid ice in the bar of the resort’s Aurora Ice Museum. The hot springs are always available for use and include an adults-only outdoor pool.

If an airplane trip to Alaska doesn’t fit in with your budgetary considerations or working schedule, a weekend at a mountain lodge can satisfy longings for pristine air and warm evenings by the fire. The Cascade mountain range of Oregon and Washington offers many such options. Shelter Cove Resort on Odell lake in Central Oregon has cabins situated under towering old-growth Douglas fir trees. All of the cabins contain wood stoves, rustically inspired yet comfortable decor, lake views and fully stocked kitchens. There are many similar resorts and lodges throughout the Cascade mountain range of Washington and Oregon, many within only a two-hour drive from any major city.

Consider a Valentine’s Day cruise to Mexico if you already live in a cold climate and need some blue skies and sun during the middle of a dreary winter. The smaller cruise lines are recommended for a more intimate experience. American Safari Cruises features luxury yachts with passenger capacities of 12 to 36, gourmet cuisine complemented by fine wines, and a good variety of departure dates and lengths of excursions. Because of their small size these vessels are able to access remote coves and bays that the passengers of the larger cruise ships are never able to experience. Some rooms have a small balcony. The available activities include whale whale watching, skiff rides for up-close sightseeing, beach barbeques, snorkeling and flight-seeing.

Whether it’s the rejuvenating warmth of the sun or a snowy, romantic ambiance that you desire, the West coast has many destinations that can provide a variety of either preference for a Valentine’s Day vacation.

The White Mountains for Valentine’s Day

February 2, 2012 in U.S by TravelReflex Team

New Hampshire mountainsHistoric covered bridges, cozy inns and crackling fireplaces make New Hampshire’s White Mountains one of the most romantic destinations for the winter months. Even if you don’t have a knack for skiing and snowshoeing, the quaint shops and welcoming restaurants will offer plenty of fun for you and your sweetie—but you probably won’t want to leave the sanctuary of your room anyway!

Jackson, a village tucked in the nooks of the eastern White Mountains, is the perfect place to start your romantic getaway. Just north of the shopping outlets of North Conway (where you’ll find brands like Banana Republic, Bass, Coach, J. Crew and Eddie Bauer at deep discounts!), Jackson boasts the splendid Wentworth Inn- a quintessentially New England property. Outfitted splendidly with French provincial furnishings, private hearths (bearskin rug not included), and elegant dining, the Wentworth will sweeten the deal with chocolate covered strawberries, fresh flowers or even champagne waiting for you in your suite. The dining room is homey and rustic with oil lamps in the center of the tables that flicker over the cushy leather-trimmed seats.

If your idea of romance includes the thrill of speed and snow, check out the skiing at Cannon Mountain. The trails range from bunny to extreme, and if you are budget minded, they offer half day lift tickets after noon. You’ll be in no rush to hit the slopes before noon anyway, when you stay at the Franconia Inn, just minutes from the mountain. Gourmet cuisine, skating, sledding and even sweet, horse-drawn sleigh rides will keep you charmed, whilst the steamy open air Jacuzzi will keep you warm.

For a real adventure together, take your lover to the Mount Washington Auto Road where the SnowCoach awaits. This four track, all-wheel drive caravan navigates snow and slush all the way above the tree line of the tallest peak in the Northeast. The dramatic view from the summit will definitely evoke a strong urge to hold hands with, kiss passionately or at least wrap your arms around your Valentine.

Whether you seek the fresh air, gorgeous mountain scenery or just the warmth (and flattering lighting) that an open fire provides, the White Mountains will provide. Valentine’s day should be a holiday of gazing lovingly over a bottle of wine and snuggling, whether on that bearskin rug or over a striking vista in the cold. Let Cupid work his moves on you in one of the most romantic regions around!

Noella Schink is a travel writer from Portland, Maine, and she loves to visit the White Mountains with her husband, whether it’s Valentine’s day or not. She recommends making your hotel booking in the White Mountains with Excellent Hotels, where there are luxury properties offered throughout the region.

Vegas on Budget

December 24, 2011 in U.S by TravelReflex Team

View of The Venetian Las Vegas from the Palazzo

Most people who plan a trip to Las Vegas expect to spend a great deal of money during their time there. While it’s true that Vegas has somewhat of a stigma associated with spending money in a frivolous manner, doing so can actually cause you to feel guilty both during and after your vacation, which is something that no one should have to experience. The fact is there are a variety of things that one can do in order to experience Vegas on a budget, as just because you can spend a great deal of money there doesn’t mean that you should. The following are just a few tips that can help you to save money during your next trip to Vegas.

Stay At an Inexpensive Hotel

Vegas is home to some of the most impressive hotels in the world, many of which come along with rather high rates per evening. While these hotels are surely omnipresent, you can save a great deal of money by staying at a lesser-known hotel. Not only will this save you money, but it can actually help you to bypass the crowds that are often associated with large hotels. Always spend a decent amount of time researching rates when looking into which hotel you plan to book.

Eat at Buffets

Over the course of the past ten years some of the finest restaurants in the world have sprung up in Las Vegas. It is surely possible to spend a great deal of money on meals while in the city, Vegas is also home to some of the best and least expensive buffets in America. Buffets are often located in casinos, and sometimes allow one to eat as much as they can stomach for as little as a few dollars. This is ideal for those who wish to spend their money elsewhere while on vacation, as a couple trips to the buffet each day can provide you with the energy you need to explore the city. Note that quality can vary dramatically from one buffet to another; look for those which attract large crowds, which is often a sign that the food is good.

Set a Limit at the Casino

One of the main reasons why people travel to Vegas is to gamble. Bingo, slot machines, and other casino games can be found all over the city at any time of day or not. As a result, it can be quite tempting to spend a great deal of money on gambling. The fact is, gambling can be dangerous; especially for those with poor will-power. Bearing this in mind, you should strive to set a limit when heading out to the casino.

Florida villas in the Orlando area offer easy access to all of the famous theme parks – including Walt Disney World® Resort and the Universal Orlando Resort® complex. In addition the beaches close to Florida offer plenty of space to sit back and relax. Space seems to be something of an industry in Florida – the Kennedy Space Center is located just 35 miles down the road from Orlando and offers a different theme for part of your holiday. The coastline around the world famous Cape Canaveral has been protected thanks to the needs of NASA’s complex; it is famous for its unspoilt beaches and there are a number of small towns along the coastline that offer great dining and shopping experiences. Surfing is at its best on the warm sub-tropical beaches – and if you haven’t learned to surf yet, this is the place to give it a go. At the Space Center itself there are a range of exhibitions and although the Space Shuttle Program is now at an end, unmanned rocket launches still take place from Cape Canaveral – the chance to view one of these will beat all the theme parks put together – even for the kids!

Getting outdoors

For those enjoying a Florida villa holiday on this coastline there are numerous opportunities to get away from it all. Florida has a number of State Parks – and a number of National Parks. Amongst the most famous is the Everglades National Park which is definitely worth a visit. Take an airboat ride through its swamps and enjoy some alligator spotting! The State Parks have a slightly different theme and are great places for fishing, hiking and cycling. If you choose a Florida villa holiday the State Parks will offer a chance to get away from your home from home in the form of well-equipped camp sites, or for the more adventurous some ‘wild camping’.

Colorado: The Best Source of White Water Rafting

August 17, 2011 in U.S by TravelReflex Team

Wall of waterOne of the best feelings any adventurer can hope for is rushing down a wild river with nothing between you and the rapids, but a paddle and a small raft. Having grown up in Southern Utah, I have experienced a wide taste of adventure including hiking, canyoneering and biking. But none of them match the adrenaline pump you get from rafting down a raging river. As such, it became a hobby of mine to explore different rivers, which eventually lead to me becoming a river guide. Most recently, I’ve tried guiding for the Colorado River. Since I am constantly seeking adventure and trying hone my skill, I recently decided to try Whitewater Rafting Colorado as I’ve heard some exciting things.

In hopes to get a job in Colorado with Whitewater Rafting Colorado, I booked a trip with my best friend. Who actually may even be more passionate about river rafting than me. This was an awesome way to get more experience with different rivers. We booked an Arkansas River Rafting trip, and had the time of our lives.

When deciding which Arkansas River Rafting trip to book, we considered all of our options. There were both single day trips as well as multi-day. Being the adventurers that we are, we decided to book the five-day trip and get the most out of our experience.

We were greeted with a friendly and experienced staff, and were ready for the fun ahead of us. Also, we wanted to show off some of our own paddling skills. The guide was quickly impressed with our experience, so we were able to raft down some parts of the river that are off limits to beginners. Through our five-day adventure with Arkansas River Rafting, we were able to experience the river from top to bottom and study the ins and outs and patterns of the river. Additionally, we quickly made friends with the guides and the other people on the trip. It always seems that people who are drawn to adventure are inherently friendly, fun and enjoy laughing and having a great time.

One of the most beautiful and action packed stretches started the very first day. We started our trip out in the Narrows, which was completely relentless, and we absolutely loved it. We paddled hard throughout the day and let the river take us through different rapids, exciting drops including the Miracle Mile and House Rock, and the serine scenery, which surrounded us all the while. In fact, after we had lunch, we had time to digest both our food and the atmosphere. It really gave us energy before entering into Browns Canyon and setting up camp for the next day of adventure.

On day two, we got up early, packed up camp, and were ready for the cool rushing water to carry us on to the next point. Browns Canyon offered even more drops, more rapids and challenged us as this was probably the warmest day on the whole trip. It also offered some competitive adventure, as we were able to pass by another group of white water rafters, who had signed up for a half-day adventure. They tried their best to catch up with us, but with the experienced guides and our own skills combined, we were able to zoom through the canyon and experience the river in a way that I am convinced, no other company could provide.

The next two days were equally packed with as much excitement as the days prior. With adventure, rapids, and drops at every corner, everyone was able to get their adrenaline fill while staying safe at the same time. Everyone knows that in order to have the most amount of fun, it is important to stay safe. That is one thing that impressed me about this trip. Regardless of everyone’s surge for adventure, everyone had a deep respect for the river and for the power it held. As a result, we made sure to stay hydrated, keep sunscreen on, and respect the river by staying away from anything dangerous and tackling anything that appeared conquerable.

The last day of the trip sadly came to fast. No one wanted it to end, so we promised each other that instead of conserving our energy, we would do our best to paddle like crazy and wear ourselves out. As we are experienced rafters, we ended the five-day stretch at Royal Gorge and had the time of our lives. We paddled through steep walls and raging rapids and had a taste of the Numbers section of the trip. We braved powerful hydraulics and pulled all sorts of moves to battle through the rapids. This was one of the best trips I have ever experienced and I can’t wait to start guiding myself in Colorado.

Hawaii – A Dream Vacation Come True

August 12, 2011 in U.S by TravelReflex Team

Hawaii Sunset - Kona, HI - 1993

Many people dream of visiting Hawaii. Everything you’ve heard about Hawaii being “a piece of Paradise that isn’t attached to the earth, but seems to float just above it,” is true. The soft trade winds, air filled with the scent of plumaria blossoms, a spectacular turquoise ocean, and sandy beaches that range from dazzling white to surprising black – all make up Hawaii.

And the truth is, Hawaii is even more than all of that. Each one of Hawaii’s islands is unique. If you’ve seen one, you certainly have not seen them all.

Kauai, the most northern island in Hawaii’s chain, is distinctive for its extraordinary natural beauty. The lush tropical vegetation has earned Kauai the nickname “The Garden Island.” Kauai highlights include stunning Wiamea Canyon, known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.”

Oahu is the home to Hawaii’s state capital, Honolulu, and the largest portion of Hawaii’s population. Here you can visit Dole’s pineapple fields, watch world-class surfing in the giant waves of the North Shore, and even enjoy cultural activities such as art museums, symphony concerts, and theater.

Maui, the second largest island, is the “windsurfing capitol of the world.” It’s most iconic activity is watching a spectacular sunrise from the top of the Haleakala crater, as did Mark Twain who said,”It’s the most sublime thing I ever saw.” On Maui you can also hang-glide, take a glider ride, or even clamber through the caves of a real lava tube.

Hawaii’s Big Island is larger than all of the other islands combined, and is vast enough that it amazingly holds 11 of the world’s 13 climatic zones. Here you’ll see everything from cattle ranches to active volcanoes, from coffee plantations to apple orchards. You can bask on sandy beaches or hike above the timberline on snow-capped mountains.

Hawaii offers something for everyone, all amidst tropical beauty and friendly people. Learn to hula dance, make a flower lei, prepare fresh mahi mahi with succulent papaya, and eat shave ice.

So as you can see, like a delicious smorgasbord Hawaii offers a wonderful variety for every taste. And if you’re a budget traveler, the secret to an affordable Hawaiian vacation is – a timeshare rental.

When timeshare owners are unable to use their week, they can list it for rent. This allows vacationers like you to find real bargains.

Timeshare rentals give you a real home-away-from-home vacation accommodation, with separate bedrooms, a living room and a dining area. The full-sized, fully-equipped kitchen makes meal time also easy on the budget. And most timeshare resorts offer amenities that are included in the low rental price, including swimming pools (often with waterpark features), hot tubs, children’s playgrounds, tennis courts, arcade game rooms, and the list goes on.

So when you dream of going to Hawaii but think you can’t afford it – think again, and check out Hawaii’s timeshare rentals.

Alice Perkins is a timeshare travel blogger for RedWeek.com, the largest online market place for timeshare rentals, where vacationers can find luxury accommodations for less than the cost of a typical hotel room.
